Sandai is located just south of the equator and at the southernmost point of Laikipia. The property sits approximately 1800 meters above sea level, resulting in hot and sunny days with seasonally cool and calm nights. Due to the altitude, temperatures can fluctuate greatly, ranging from 30°C during the day to 9°C at night.
While becoming increasingly difficult to forecast, Kenya typically experiences two rainy seasons. The long rains usually occur from the end of October to November, while the short rains take place towards the end of March or April and continue throughout May. Despite the rain, May is an excellent time to visit as short showers in the morning often lead to spectacular views and dramatic sunsets.
Sandai is located at a high altitude, which means that mosquitoes may be present but malariafree. While mosquito nets are not necessary, we do have them over the beds for your peace of mind. You can adjust the nets according to your preference. This makes Sandai a great destination for families traveling with young children as there is no need to take anti-malaria medication.
As with any location, insects may find their way into the house. Our staff are able to handle this and are always willing to assist in making your stay as comfortable as possible.
We recommend packing a warm fleece or jumper, a lightweight windproof jacket, long trousers a shawl or scarf as the nights and mornings at Sandai can be surprisingly chilly. For warm days, light clothing in earthy colors is most comfortable, especially for safaris among wild animals. At this high altitude, it is essential to bring good sun cream, sunglasses, and a hat as the sun can be very strong.
We highly recommend bringing a good pair of walking shoes as the ground around Sandai can be uneven. Many of our guests enjoy guided bush walks on the property, and sturdy shoes will ensure that you are comfortable and safe while exploring the beautiful natural surroundings.
While we recommend a minimum stay of two nights at Sandai, we encourage our guests to plan for a week or more to fully experience all that the property and the surrounding areas have to offer. With a longer stay, you will have ample time to immerse yourself in the beauty of the natural surroundings, participate in various activities, and connect with the local community.
We do offer WiFi access for all our guests at the main house. Additionally, the local telephone service providers Airtel and Safaricom have good coverage in the area, ensuring that you can stay connected during your stay at Sandai.
At Sandai, we operate off the grid, relying on a generator to power the property in the evenings, which is also the best time to charge your electronic devices. During the day, we utilize a solar system to power our operations, but this is dependent on the system having enough charge. If too many devices are plugged in, the system may shut off. To ensure that you have access to power for your devices, we recommend that you charge them the previous evening. A power bank is always a great gadget to add to your packing list.
In addition, blow dryers, hair straighteners are not compatible with our systems, kindly do not attempt to use them as this may damage our systems.
We have a tip box that is shared among all staff at the end of each month. Please note that tips are always at the discretion of our guests. Our staff work hard to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable, and any gratuity you choose to leave is greatly appreciated.
Please do not hesitate to ask any additional questions that we may not have covered.
